Mew released their new album +- last month and I wanted to
talk a bit about it. I like to think that I have a diverse taste in music, but
I mostly usually listen to pop/rock/alternative stuff. Every now and then
however, I fall absolutely in love with some odd band, and even though Mew can
technically be placed in the alternative rock category (at least according to
the internet, and everyone knows how reliable that is!), they just have a bit
of experimental indie mixed in there that make them stand out.
The album is the first one in five years but fortunately
they haven’t changed that much. The whole thing starts off with the album’s
first single called Satellite, and you can immediately hear that it is a Mew
song – partly due to Jonas Bjerre’s distinct voice, but also because of the
very dream-like style of the song with the constantly changing tempo.
Most of their songs have a very clean and polished sound.
And then we have songs like Clinging to a bad dream, which seems so messy and it’s
hard to focus on anything, but somehow it is so fitting with their experimental
style that it makes it sound good.
I actually really like the new album – if you’re a fan of
their music already, this sounds nicely familiar as they stick to their sound.
Even though some people think that a lot of the songs sound like each other,
you can still tell the diversity between them, if you take the time to sit down
and listen.
